Dancing Queen

I have been working on this project for 12 weeks and  I tried many things to get to my final idea. I was inspired by my own heritage and Arab culture, specifically traditional Arabic dancing costumes . Dancing is an important activity as it is used to tell stories .Braiding is also used in my culture with young girls as normally hair is hidden with a hijab. Macrame is similar to braiding so i have incorporated this into the costume to represent the braiding . I have made this costume to represent my personal culture and also educate people with this specific dance culture.

Football Kit

I have exhibited a football kit starting from a plain white polyester shirt. This was created with transfer inks and vinyl. On my white shirt I have a green, blue and black pattern as the base. This was made using the heat press and transfer inks. This was inspired by my liking for football growing up, and certain textile patterns and work I had done in the past. On top of this I had placed my vinyl. I did small triangles 3 each on my sleeve in black. There was also a small black vinyl 7 on the front for my left chest logo. There is a white strip in the middle of my shirt, following black vinyl stripes at the bottom of the front of my shirt with a ‘z’ to represent my name. On the back there was a big black vinyl 7 followed on top of a silver vinyl star with zizi in cursive black.

Greek Goddess

I have exhibited a Grecian dress inspired by Greek mythology  and specifically the goddess, Athena. My final project theme is inspired by greek goddesses, Athena, in my opinion represents the strongest goddess of all. I have explored how she was interpreted in Greek mythology and how she was visualized, what she wore and why she wore her costume in a particular way. I've created a dress that references historical greek dress codes but with a modern contemporary approach. I feel this Greek twist would appeal to people my age. The foil print represents Athena's gold breast plate that she wore to enforce her power of victory through the death of her enemies. Through sketching, draping and pattern cutting, I have created a contemporary, modern greek themed dress for today's generation of goddesses.

Cultured Zine

I have exhibited a collection of stylised, fashion collages that represent my culture. I choose to create a zine to explore and communicate a fashion culture. I am interested in how people  bring clothing together into outfits and what  those outfits can then suggest to a wider audience.A  tribe or belonging to a subculture through clothing as a form of expression to a wider audience. I communicate in a visual manner which is evident through the use of materials in my zine. I communicate in a visual way in order to tell a story. The images I have selected and used in the zine reference the culture of dressing to impress. This is very much something I respond to as part of my own youth culture.

Rio Carnival Culture

In understanding the theme of culture I have developed a costume as a personal response to the theme of carnival. My inspiration is Brazilian culture but specifically the dancers and costumes of the Rio carnival and what they represent in terms of a people’s culture.  Colors are hugely important in carnival costumes. The brighter the colors, the more the costume stands out ,with this in mind I have selected opposing colors of purple and vivid green in order to stand out and appeal to the viewer and audience. I  took into account the necessary materials such as feathers, beads and wire to create the upholstered bra and incorporated these into my design and creation. Feathers are the most important aspect of the costume as they symbolize the exotic but also represent rebirth and the rise of the spirits which  is something l wanted to capture.

Ode to Home

Weddings are one of the most important events in many cultures.  It was the first thing that I thought about after I heard the theme of the FMP, Tribes and Cultures. Everyone is unique, so I wanted to include my background, and my family history, so I chose my Polish heritage to be the theme of my project and garment. Poland has a phenomenal amount of traditional crafts such as lace making and embroidery in particular. I chose the lace fabric not by accident, it is one of the most traditional ways to make a material in Poland. Instead of buying lace, I used fabric that I found at home to add a sustainable and ethical angle but also reduce fabric waste.
