Am I Artist Enough?

I have created a set of five images for my final piece that have been included into a display board that has been produced by myself.
I wanted my work to get the point across about the art of subversive in which it over-throws a cultural system (the creative industry) and how “professional” photography is presented inside the media. My aim is to shed light into film photography being taken seriously as well as bringing visual art into the mix to show a different side to photography. I used colour film for my final piece and documented the areas around me which I found most interesting whilst working with colour theory and composition.
I have included artists who inspired me as well as my own notes from my time on this course on my display board to familiarize my audience with the background of my work.

Scarred By Society

Throughout my life I have been alienated and excluded from activities by most just because I am smaller than the average person. I’ve even been bullied and discriminated against to the point where I was afraid of social interaction as a whole for a few years. Eventually I got used to all of this and learnt how to block it all out. However the fact that I still have to do this screams volumes as to how little society has progressed in regards to equality. The scar on my back represents both literally and metaphorically the damage society has inflicted on myself and many others in the disabled community. As a photographer I plan on making future bodies of work expressing my anger and frustration towards those that still discriminate against disabled people along with my acceptance that it won't be changing any time soon.

To Be Beside the Seaside

I have exhibited a collection of images from the East Anglian coastal towns which represent different ways of culture and infrastructure. With my theme being coastal towns, I have explored different ways to  create my images in a way that can show off a different way of viewing these locations. I have included a variety of different types of images, using different techniques as well as using different film cameras. The polaroids represent the life cycle of coastal towns, it goes from, the first image being bright and colorful and as you slowly go through the polaroids they lose their color, this represents the coastal towns losing their business due to erosion of the cliff faces. The size of the zine represents a stack of polaroids, as the zine stretches out rather than having a spine this makes it look like an actual stack of polaroids

Always Tired Club

I have exhibited a collection of photos that I had taken with a theme surrounding music and how music into mental health. I focused my work around alternative music , alternative fashion etc. how these forms of self-expression with music and fashion can occasionally link into mental health. I didn't want to focus on just shooting the same couple of things so I focused on doing different photographic subgenres , landscapes , self portraiture etc. I photographed the leather jacket to show the fashion side , focusing on pins , patches and things I had personally added to it. I decided to create a physical CD for my final piece with my own songs themed around mental health, creating this felt like it fully linked the two parts of my theme together fully.

Questionable Standards

I see myself as a portrait, fashion photographer. I have exhibited 5 thinkable images that include models between the ages of 13-50. The inspiration for this project has come from the portrait photographer Peter Devito. I have not only taken portrait headshots, I have experimented by creatively using different areas of the body to place the lettering, adding my own touch into the making of these 5 delicate images. I have researched the sensitive subjects of stereotypes and beauty standards. These 5 images have been taken connected with the question, the individuals are commonly asked about their uniqueness. ‘Would she like a sweet?’ It is indicating that because she has Down Syndrome, people of her disability can’t talk for themselves.

History Mystery

Throughout my work a majority of my practices are created using a digital camera in order for me to complete the editing processes  which I need. Presented in my exhibition are a series of black and white photographs of churches which have been manipulated to create a church which doesn’t exist; By utilizing Adobe photoshop I was able to erase parts of a photograph to create the non-existent church which I desired. The truth behind the topic reflects on modern day life and how artificial intelligence can change certain aspects within life.

Will the art world change in the future? Will this override natural photography? Or is our future of photography in danger…

Biophilia

I have created five images exploring the topic of Biophilia (love of life and the living world).  I am indicating how the world is being destroyed by humans being wasteful, over consuming and producing plastic. I am portraying the devastating reality by burning a range of film negatives as a metaphor for the damaged world. The faces burned in these portraits show it’s not only the individuals who should be taking action, but we should do so collectively. My work includes both analog and digital photography, printing the burned negatives onto photographic paper. I’m presenting the images in a cycle to represent cycles in nature and how it’s our responsibility to preserve it.

Suburbia vs Concrete Jungle

I have exhibited a diptych that represents life in the city vs life in Suburbia. Both these images are edited with selected colouring, I did this with the intent of highlighting how quickly pollution and progression can impact climate change. For the image on the left, I chose to keep the sky blue and the bottom of the image black and white, to emphasize the clear sky. And for the image on the right I left the sign coloured to accentuate the important message.        Climate change is important to me and I intend to continue my research so I can help myself and others to protect the planet. My future work will take an activist approach to climate change to achieve my goal of spreading the message to stop climate change. How are you going to help?

Eye Sight

I am exhibiting a collection of images that I intended to go into a scrapbook. My work is a compilation of candid images that I have taken as they are. I did not arrange anything or set them up in any way.  I wanted to have them as photographic illustrations in a scrapbook to show them as they are, and as they have caught my eye. With it being a scrap book I wanted to decorate it how I would if I was making it for my personal use. On some pages you will see some googly eyes stuck on them. This links back to my project name and theme as they represent my eyes and what I have seen.

Miracle of Life Through the Lens

I have exhibited an image taken with a digital camera nikon which represents the journey of pregnancy and the emotions you may experience. With my  theme being the miracle of family, I have explored different ways to  create a powerful image about pregnancy. My project tells the story of conception to birth and key stages of pregnancy. The photo is a woman with her baby bump and flowers which shows how natural pregnancy is. In my work I'm trying to show how magical pregnancy is if you get to experience it. I made the flowers more vibrant to show the warm glow you can experience and on the belly to catch the eye of my audience.
